Broken! (in design)

In Broken, players freely modify the playing cards by writing on the sleeves with a marker, customizing their cards and thus creating a unique strategy that adapts to their opponents' plays. Players attack each other to steal the title of Cards Balancing Committee Chairman, who earns points each round and is the only one with the magical eraser that can wipe away past modifications. Each game is unique, with endless combinations and synergies to discover.
For this game I was trying to think of different ways to push boundaries in card games. I wanted to really force myself to think outside the box and design something very different from anything I had aver done. Every week I read the game design articles written by Mark Rosewater, Head Vision Designer for Magic the Gathering and one day I was reading about the latest Un-set, special sets where the company bends some rules and experiments with many outside components and interactions. I was inspired to capture only the basic rules I needed for a card game to work and merge them with some unique non-card based interaction. That's when I thought of giving players the power to design their own experience by direct modification of the cards, seeing as I myself had a lot of fun designing a custom magic set many years ago. Customizing something in an established rules framework allows experimentation without leaving a comfort zone. I decided to design the game directly with the multiplayer in mind so I introduced the Chairman mechanic, where players steal a role from one another to score points.
